The 2nd Meeting of the Heads of Mapping Institutions of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) was held on 3 December 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing together senior representatives of civil and military mapping authorities from the Member States and Observers of the OTS.
Mr. Merey Mukazhan, Deputy Secretary General of the OTS, addressed at the opening session and highlighted the growing cooperation in the field of geodesy, cartography and cadastre within the framework of the OTS.
He also highlighted the rich scientific heritage of the Turkic world in geography and cartography. In this context, he recalled the contributions of distinguished scholars such as Mahmud Kashgari, who produced one of the earliest world maps in the 11th century, and Piri Reis, whose 16th century map is recognized as one of the earliest detailed depictions of major geographic regions and continents.
Throughout the Meeting, delegations exchanged views on current initiatives and discussed opportunities to strengthen technical collaboration among the relevant authorities. The Parties expressed their shared commitment to further deepening cooperation in the fields of cartography and geodesy within the framework of the OTS.
As an outcome of the Meeting, the Joint Declaration of the 2nd Meeting of the Heads of Mapping Institutions of the OTS was signed. The 3rd Meeting of the Heads of Mapping Institutions of the OTS will be held in the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2026.
